Good flowers, and some not such good flowers. One of my growers gotten eaten up by another, but some of the product quality just keeps getting better. Give and take. Balance. Trying some new growers! Nice flower work and some not so nice arrangements, a new computer, some art, some wedding work, some bowling, some hacky sack, and some bike riding. Some camping, some yoga, some of this and that. If I can just get these darned pictures to upload. Guess I'll have to try again in the morning. ummm.... A visit with family and hanging out with new friends and old friends. Quite a year to bare. But, that still doesn't account for the fact that I did 80 something arrangements on Saturday. The orders were bigger than expected too. We had such a great selection of flowers :Anemones and Roses and Iris and Gerbera and Orchids and Ginger and Anthurium, Tulips, Bells of Ireland, Larkspur, Nigella, Lilies, Dahlias, Hyacinths, Heliconia, Freesia and on and on. I have to say it was a success, but the best part is that there are not anymore of these all out floral holidays until next year. I know it seems like we love this monumental amount of business all at once, but quite honestly, it takes it's toll on us. Yes, yes the cash flow is good, but is it worth it? Maybe yes, maybe no. Yes, we need to roll in the dough once and a while to feel needed and wanted, but when it comes down to the bottom line, there is more to be made on regular consistent business than the all out knock em' out, can we do em' all, take every order, make everyone happy business. Ok, I am complaining a bit, but that is just because I am a bit exhausted. All in all it was good and the team we have here made it a breeze, so I am just going to leave it at that. Thanks Team More Flowers!! And by the way, Happy Anniversary to Jason! 7 Years service to More Flowers!

Single and Such

Thought a few photos of me would help?

More Flowers is looking for some new help. We will be having a gradual turnover come summer and fall, so give me a shout if you are interested.

Administrative Professionals Day/Week is next week, so don't forget to say thank you with some flowers!!

Mother's Day is just around the corner, so if you ordered last year, you will be getting your reminder call around the 1st of May.

Yet once again, Spring is in the air in Colorado, and the darned Tulips are practically over. The spring flowers are always better before the actual spring time. So Anemones and Ranunculus are almost gone too. The local greenhouse Iris are still really nice though, and the Rose are coming in from California better than ever. I have my fingers crossed that my local field flowers will be coming this year too. Many of the growers have had hard times and are getting out of the business. Too much competition coming from South America explains the problem. Heating a greenhouse is extremely cost prohibitive in Colorado, in fact, we lost another grower this year right before Valentine's Day. Oddly though, there is a new grower of Orchid Plants that moved into an old Rose growers facility. They have exceptional product, but their survival is really subject to the public buying more Orchid Plants.

That is all the news for now...

New Current Valentine's Day Pricing, expires 02/07/08

Monday February 11th,2008- $75 plus tax and delivery
Tuesday February 12th,2008- $85 plus tax and delivery
Wednesday February 13th,2008- $95 plus tax and delivery
Thursday February 14th,2008- $125 plus tax and delivery
Roses in Red or White(one dozen mixed with other flowers), anyday February 11th-14th- $125 plus tax and delivery
Roses in all other colors(one dozen mixed with orther flowers), anyday February 11th-14th- $110 plus tax and delivery
Pick up orders February 11th- $65 plus tax
Pick up orders February 12th - 14th- $75 plus tax

Valentine's Day Information... please read before placing your order online!

Yesterday, we started our call outs to all the people that ordered Valentine's Day flowers last year. We do this every year, and have such great luck at getting lots of repeat orders, but more importantly, maintain some calm. By getting our orders lined up early, we partially eliminate some of the mayhem at the end, and take care of our regulars! Unfortunately for all of the demand, it pressures our system, the supply, and our ability to fill every last order. Prices MUST go up from February 11th to the 14th. It is the only way for us to make sure that you get what you are used to, abundance, quality, freshness, the best!!

Initially we start with a price schedule that is most expensive for delivery on Thursday the 14th of February, and is less costly each day prior to the 14th. It is always better to send the flowers a couple of days earlier anyway, because things are so out of control as we get closer. Plus the deliveries are more timely and the flowers are enjoyed and envied longer. As we get booked up, and the early birds are taken care of, we raise the prices again. So you are rewarded for planning ahead. The price MINIMUMS listed are good for a couple of more days.

Monday February 11th,2008- $65 plus tax and delivery
Tuesday February 12th,2008- $75 plus tax and delivery
Wednesday February 13th,2008- $85 plus tax and delivery
Thursday February 14th,2008- $100 plus tax and delivery
Roses in Red or White(one dozen mixed with other flowers), anyday February 11th-14th- $125 plus tax and delivery
Roses in all other colors(one dozen mixed with orther flowers), anyday February 11th-14th- $110 plus tax and delivery
Pick up orders February 11th-13th- $65 plus tax
Pick up orders February 14th- $75 plus tax

Valentine's Day is Looming...

Less than three weeks away, Valentine's Day is upon us. Last year for the first time ever, I cut off order taking the day before the 14th. Topped that by putting a sign in the door, that we were not accepting walkins. Please order early, and now is the time.

Next week, we will call out to anyone that ordered last year, and give them a reminder to order. The best pricing is between now and the 31st. Once we roll into February, prices start to go up. I am still trying to decide how to price for this year. Seems last year our prices were right on, but due to the huge demand, and the higher costs of doing business this year, I think we will have to raise the prices a bit.

Please know, despite what the holiday appears to be to the outsider, Valentine's Day is not the huge money maker that you might think. Ask any flower person in the business, and they will tell you that when it is all said and done, it is a spin your wheels faster week. We usually end up realizing we just worked really really hard for not to much more. The upside is that this is the one time a year that there are so many flower arrangements out there all on the same day. People get to see our work against all the others, and the difference is very clear. So, I like to say that it is the best marketing day of the year. We always get lots of spin off business from what we send out on Valentine's Day.

I will be posting pricing here on the blog over the next few days. Please don't wait, call your order in now! Oh, and this is the one time you will hear me say it.... Happy Valentine's Day!!

Rough & Tough

Broken flower stems, mixed up emotions and feelings, reality sets in. What more can I say. This has been one awful month and a half. Nothing to give Thanks for, no one to light candles with, lost lust for flowers, lack of concentration, dreary Christmas, lonely New Years. What the hell, lucky I have time's healing on my side. Smiling for January. Oh, no, the flower business was fine. Sales may be down a tad, but profit was up, oddly enough. And pleased to see some Spring Anemones and Ranunculus. Tulips are just around the corner too. Ugh to Valentine's Day, but if you know me, you know I dread the madness of this outrageous hallmark holiday. Ok, yeah, there is a shot in the arm of cash flow, just enough to make up for the January quiet times. But really, this year, you better get your order in early, and it best be more than $100. I am trying to keep my self busy doing some year end organizing and some early spring cleaning. Throwing out the old crap and trying to neat and tidy the good stuff. Definitely going to try to keep up the bloggery, since I have been super bad at that. Repot the Orchid plants and continue to imagine that I can get them to bloom. Stop using ginger jar vases, more squatty cylinders. Lost yet another local cut flower grower! Maybe paint some more? I don't know about that. How about get some exercise? Nah! A new iMac would be good! Ok, well, I am still not quite there yet. Give me a little more time. I think I will try to write a nice entry next week.

Gotta gloat and boast and share some compliments and

critiques! They were beautiful!
I'm sorry I didn't get to meet with you but I hope to some day soon when I'm back in Denver visiting.
Sincerely,
Cheryl

David,
My clients received your box of flowers today and they were fantastic!!! You are a delight to work with. I know I can depend on fabulous colors and flowers when working with you.
Jeannie

Good Morning David,
Just wanted you to know that I received the beautiful arrangement of flowers this morning from my sister, Loaleen. Sorry I was not here to accept delivery from Tim. As always the arrangement is as beautiful as ever. Your team does the best work of anyone I have ever known. Please thank them for me. Best of luck to all of you this year and always. Again, thank you for the beautiful work.

Rosemary

Thanks! Great to meet you too. We are loving the flowers (still). There were many raving comments on them, including from the caterer. The party was in all ways a great success. Hope to see you again soon.
Helen

Thank you David. The flowers made the room! Everyone was asking about them. The arrangements for the buffet tables were exceptional. The colors for all the arrangements were gorgeous and just absolutely perfect. Thank you thank you!
Jen

I wanted to say thank you so much for always having the most gorgeously unique arrangements. My boyfriend only uses More Flowers and I always know the flowers are from him the minute I see the arrangement. They certainly stand out from all others and are my absolute favorite.
Thank you again,
Misty

David,
I wanted to thank you for getting my order done in the same day for me. You know me, I have a hard time planning ahead. The arrangment was beautiful, as always, but I just wanted to let you know that the flowers did not last like the usually do. This is the first time that one of my arrangments has not lasted at least a week. I removed about 80% of the flowers tonight that were looking, um not so good. I can almost always get at least 2 weeks out of my flowers. I wanted to bring this to your attention and just let you know.
But most of all Thank you again for all of the beautiful arangements, you ARE the BEST!

Sincerely,
Susan

Just had to let you know how much I am enjoying the magnificent flowers you delivered yesterday!! You are so amazing and I am always blown away by the beauty and design. MORE FLOWERS makes me SO HAPPY
Regards,
Colette

David, the flowers you provided were beautiful – everyone commented on them and they lasted quite a long time. Thank you again for making a special impact on our event.

Dear David,
Itzy and I can't express the joy we felt over last weekend. Michelle and Kevin were ecstatic with everything about the wedding. Your flowers were just exactly what you promised- fresh, elegant, well-balanced, and romantic as well as youthful! Michelle was delighted. Without living there, it is hard to get the job done right. After what seemed like a million phone calls between Michelle and I, the wedding went so well. You are a doll to work with, so confident and sweet and competent. To your credit, Scott, of the Flagstaff House Restaurant, took your name. He stated that he hadn't had flowers like that all summer. You made his restaurant look lovelier. We gave some of the arrangements to special friends and took the flowers to the hotel for the Monday brunch. They were even more beautiful that next day, particularly those outside on the terrace. I was just sorry I didn't get to take any home with me. I just can't thank you enough as I always feel flowers make the
day. You certainly made mine. You're my kind of florist!!!!!
Thank you for everything,
Renee

Lots of things going on since August...

For starters, my birthday was wonderful! Just a really great week and lots of love and friends and fun. I guess I had no less than 20 acknowlegements of my birthday by cards, emails, calls, and visits. German Chocolate Cake from Gateaux as always, a couple of great dinners out, and some wonderful gifts.

Fall is in the air, and the field flowers are starting to fade, but not gone yet. Business is picking up as people switch gears for the changes that occur right around now. Luckily I got one last camping trip in for the summer. Went to Chaco Canyon and El Malpais in northern New Mexico and then onto Ouray. Beautiful and amazing, educational, and relaxing. A very brief visit from my brother Andrew, a couple of holidays, green chiles, a visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens, a picnic at confluence, and lots of other good times passed the rest of the end of summer away. Fall is great in Colorado, so I can let summer go. There is something very magical about the last seven months!

By the way, the photos are of a Praying Mantis that visited my front door a few weeks ago. A couple of shots at the Botanic garden... the blue Ginger was blooming and palms were making really beautiful displays. And that is me and my brother Andrew. And my white Ginger plant made it's annual flower.

Speaking of my plants blooming!!! I am having some great luck lately with my Orchid Plants. In the last month, two Phals have spiked and are blooming. Three Cymbidiums have sent up numerous spikes. And at least 3 other "intergenerics" have bloomed. Plus, I have two Dendrobium that are sending up tiny spikes too. I am thrilled, ask anyone that has taken the time for me to show them off in the shop. I guess it really does help to repot, fertilize, water, and give some tender love to these tricky plants. Maybe my next post will be pictures of my Orchid plants blooming.

As my Dad always says, that's the news for the day, or in this case month!

Tight and Full Summer Flower Fun

It's been a while since I blogged... I've been goofing off like I said in my last post. More Flowers has been enjoying this summer immensely. Nice constant business, smooth and steady... no completely dead weeks, and no out of control crazy busy weeks. Feeling spoiled you might say. Topping it all off with a few more days of relaxation next week. I am lucky enough to have a business that during the slower times, I can close up and have a quiet afternoon to catch up. So, if you have come knocking at 3:30 and we are closed, know that I am out taking care of myself. Of course, the other side of the coin, when we are slammed busy, I might be working into the late hours of the night. So, there is a balance. That's why we always tell customers to call first and make sure that we are around. Better yet, call in the morning, and then we can plan for a delivery or later afternoon pick up. Sometimes, we even leave flowers hidden just outside the door for pick ups that come after we have taken off for the day.

Our hours are variable, and you can always place the order online on our website at www.moreflowers.com. We generally open some time between 7:30 and 9AM and close between 3:30 and 6PM. More like a studio, than a typical retail store front, walk ins are welcome, though we like a call first to know for sure what you might be needing. Be it a loose wrap of flowers, a bunch of this or that, or a nice vase arrangement, at least we can have it ready for you when you arrive. It can get to be rather hectic around here at times, and then walk ins are not likely to get the attention they deserve.

Oh, and Saturday's! Well, Saturday is usually just a few hours. Say, 11 or so until 2 or so! Again, call first, because sometimes, I will take the whole day off. In the summer, I have very little weekend activity in the shop, but the rest of the year Saturday's are often from 10 until 2 or 3. If you are looking for Saturday delivery, call earlier in the week to make sure that we will be delivering. When it is busy enough, I will have a delivery person in to help out. Sometimes, I can take the delivery myself if it is closer. We are closed on Sunday.

Hopefully that explains some aspects of our strange hours at More Flowers. The pictures below are our front door and our corner at 15th Street and Central Street.

Party at Helen's

Lots of California Roses from Eufloria and Colorado Grown Mini Gerbera from Jordans! Somehow, between my 3 growers, and a bit of hesitation on my part, we got 2 batches of Peonies from the Colorado flower fields. One grower contracted the whole crop out to Whole Foods basically, and I got left in the dust. The other grower is so unreliable that he made a one time appearance and never came back. And the 3rd never followed up, and I wasn't willing to book in a standing order for a huge lot of them. Oh well, so it goes.

The other field flowers started though! Today we got Yarrow, Veronica, Iris, and some Ornamental Grasses. There should be some more items starting soon, and then eventually Sunflowers galore. I really love mixing the wild looking stuff with my other locally greenhouse grown product and Orchids or other Tropical flowers. I will try to get some photos of these arrangements up soon.

In the meantime, I have a nice photograph of me to share. This was taken a couple of weeks ago up in the Medicine Bow Snowy Range mountains in Wyoming. Michael and I went for a quick car camping trip to my favorite hot springs. Hoping to close up and get out of town a few more times this summer, so call first if you are thinking you might stop by on a Saturday. You never know when I am going to try to escape for a little relaxation now that things have slowed down for the summer some.

Website up and running & I finally made it into Westword again after 19 Years!

Though there are still a few things that need some work, the site is up and running. I am delighted with how things are moving along now. Mostly I am to blame for the delays, since the flower biz won't stop for a minute for me to get other things done. Luckily I have the two most patient web people in the world working on our site, not to mention their talent and dedication is of perfection. Thanks Heidi and Trey.
Summer is here and More Flowers and gang are getting a chance to catch our breath. Summer flowers are right around the corner, and though I haven't seen a Peony yet, we are supposed to get some on Monday the 4th.
